It's almost an unwritten law. Men are very dominate when it comes to 'carrying on the name'. I would agree with Stasha -- hyphenate it if it's that big a deal. I don't know your SO, but it could cause permanent relationship problems. He may feel that you don't see your relationship as long-term and are making plans to keep this child more a part of you than him. I really don't think it is unfair of him to want to use his last name, but if you wanted to hyphenate it I would hope he'd be willing to do that.
